Lucie Safarova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands are the second team to qualify for the WTA Finals in Singapore, the WTA announced on 16 August. Safarova (Czech Republic) and Mattek-Sands (USA) first teamed up at the 2015 Australian Open with outstanding success winning the Australian Open Women’s doubles and the Roland Garros Women’s doubles plus the semi finals of the Wimbledon Ladies doubles.
The 30-year-old Mattek-Sands and 28-year-old Safarova combination guaranteed their qualification for the WTA Finals in Singapore by winning the Canadian Open doubles title in Toronto. The 1.77m Safarova achieved her first semi finals and beyond in Grand Slam women’s doubles events this year and achieved the double at Roland Garros by also making it to her first singles Grand Slam final.
The 1.68m Mattek-Sands after winning back-to-back Grand Slams at Roland Garros shared some extremely valuable insight or advice about her doubles success with Safarova that we can all apply when on court, “We are taking it one match at a time. Really that’s the only way you can go about it.”
The left-handed Safarova stressed friendship as the key for their success. “I think if you are not friends off court and you don’t get along well, I don’t think you can really do well on court. I think it’s important to have good energy and [be] friends.”
Make sure you buy your WTA Finals in Singapore tennis tickets to see Mattek-Sands and Safarova battle it out and fight for the year-end WTA World No.1 doubles team versus the current No.1 pair of Mirza and Hingis.
Mirza and Hingis won the last two Grand Slams: Wimbledon and the US Open, yet Mattek-Sands and Safarova have won both matches against the No.1 pair, 7-5 6-2 in the quarter finals of Roland Garros and 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 11-9 at the Madrid Open quarter finals.
