Simona Halep became the second singles player to qualify for the WTA Finals in Singapore for 2015 after defeating Katernya Bondarenko in the 2nd round of the 2015 US Open the WTA officially announced on September 3.
The 24-year-old Halep has won three titles this year: the Shenzen Open, Dubai Open and her first Premier Mandatory title at Indian Wells. The 1.68m Halep was twice a runner-up in 2015 at the Canadian Open in Toronto and the Cincinnati Open plus a semifinalist at the US Open, the Italian Open and Miami Open.
In Halep’s first WTA Finals in 2014 the Romanian won the Red Group with a 2-1 record, including handing Serena Williams her biggest defeat in many years 6-0, 6-2 before ending up at the finalist in the inaugural Singapore event.
Upon qualifying Halep said, “I am so happy to have qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore again, as it has been one of my goals for this year. Last year at the WTA Finals I had a great result, reaching the final and beating Serena in the group stage, and I will try my best to do even better this year.”
The former junior World No.1 has posted her best win-loss record for a season this year currently 47-13 and has now made the semis or better at the US Open, Wimbledon and Roland Garros. Halep won the 2008 Roland Garros juniors at 16 years old and last year Roland Garros was her first Grand Slam final battling Maria Sharapova into the deciding set.
